With the help of another Member, TruWin, Inc., Champion’s senior management selected a cohesive safety wellness team, to collect data to drive safety and wellness initiatives.
Champion’s Safety & Wellness Committee seeks to establish an atmoshphere “where employees are aware and actively pursue a superior level of safety and wellness to create a positive and productive work environment”. The team is a cross section of Champion’s company and consists of members like Valerie Alfer (Chairperson), Sue Petrock, Cindy Subrick, Faye Brockman, Bill McComas, and Patty Stephens, who were all part of the committee in the first year. The next year they added Toni Ali and Michael Serrino to the team. They were also put together in order to establish a tactical operating plan with interventions that would fit Champion. “It is critical to create a supportive environment, and establish consistent monitoring plans to measure results/outcomes.”, said Jim Donofrio of TruWin.

The safety and wellness committee conducted a Health Fair where employees were able to participate in the free screenings. At the fair, they could also receive healthy lifestyle information, and talk to health professionals. The participants from Champion found the health fair very valuable. One employee was quoted as saying, “This made me feel like Champion really cares about my health and education.” The health fair was not the only initiative that Champion put together; another program
for their employees was the “Hydra Challenge.” The goal of this challenge is for employees to drink the equivalent amount of water it would take to fill a 2,4000-gallon tank within the next 6 months. So,
if everyone would drink at least 64 ounces of water a day, then they would in fact reach their goal
and they would also become healthier in the process.
