Champion International Moving, Ltd.
Takes a Progressive Approach on Safety & Wellness:

Champion's Employees Walk Around the World for Good Health!

Champion International Moving, Ltd., a CEO Association Member, provides coordination of personal household relocation moves for major international corporations and executives. Champion is a stron advocate of workplace
safety & wellness, as evidenced by the creative programs
they have implemented.

With the help of another Member, TruWin, Inc., Champion’s senior management selected a cohesive safety wellness team, to collect data to drive safety and wellness initiatives.

Champion’s Safety & Wellness Committee seeks to establish an atmoshphere “where employees are aware and actively pursue a superior level of safety and wellness to create a positive and productive work environment”. The team is a cross section of Champion’s company and consists of members like Valerie Alfer (Chairperson), Sue Petrock, Cindy Subrick, Faye Brockman, Bill McComas, and Patty Stephens, who were all part of the committee in the first year. The next year they added Toni Ali and Michael Serrino to the team. They were also put together in order to establish a tactical operating plan with interventions that would fit Champion. “It is critical to create a supportive environment, and establish consistent monitoring plans to measure results/outcomes.”, said Jim Donofrio of TruWin.

The safety and wellness committee conducted a Health Fair where employees were able to participate in the free screenings. At the fair, they could also receive healthy lifestyle information, and talk to health professionals. The participants from Champion found the health fair very valuable. One employee was quoted as saying, “This made me feel like Champion really cares about my health and education.” The health fair was not the only initiative that Champion put together; another program
for their employees was the “Hydra Challenge.” The goal of this challenge is for employees to drink the equivalent amount of water it would take to fill a 2,4000-gallon tank within the next 6 months. So,
if everyone would drink at least 64 ounces of water a day, then they would in fact reach their goal
and they would also become healthier in the process.

A “Nutrition and Exercise Study Group” was also implemented by Champion to promote a healthy lifestyle change through sound nutritional knowledge and safe exercise programs. Champion’s
“Walk Around the World” challenge was integrated into their workplace to promote a healthy
lifestyle change for the employees overall well being. The employees were given pedometers to
keep track of miles that they walk. There were some incentives and other types of motivation to
keep the participants inspired. To date Champion employees have walked a total of 3,743 miles,
which would take them all the way to their customers in Sterling in London, England.
